The story of Levi

Levi is skiing above the Arctic Circle, on a rounded Lapland fell where the trees thin to snow-ghosted stumps and, in midwinter, the sun barely climbs over the horizon. Finland's largest ski resort makes a virtue of the dark: the polar-night weeks of December and January are skied almost entirely under floodlights, in a blue Arctic twilight the Finns call kaamos — and when the sky is clear, the northern lights take over the show.

Every November the alpine World Cup season opens its slalom program here on Levi Black, the fell's steepest face — and by tradition each winner is awarded a reindeer calf, which stays in Lapland bearing the name its champion chooses. The rest of the mountain is gentler: broad, forgiving pistes wrapping the fell in every direction, a gondola to the summit, and one of Europe's best-organized family ski schools.

Beyond the slopes, Levi is full Lapland: husky and reindeer safaris, snowmobile trails threading the wilderness, smoke saunas, and igloo hotels for watching the aurora from bed.

Local tips

◆Visit late February–April for daylight plus deep-winter snow; December is magical but nearly sunless.
◆Aurora forecasts are an app away — on strong nights, ride the gondola area's evening hours or book a fell-top dinner.
◆Try the World Cup slope early morning when it's freshly injected and groomed — it's open to the public most of the season.
◆Dress like a local: it can hit -25 °C in January. Rental shops sell full thermal overalls for a reason.

Levi's World Cup slalom winners each receive a reindeer calf — Mikaela Shiffrin has earned a small herd.

The resort sits above the Arctic Circle, where midwinter brings weeks of polar night and, often, the aurora borealis.

Levi is Finland's largest ski resort and hosts the country's only alpine World Cup races.
