Ål skisenter
The Scandinavian Alps — Norway's boldest lift-served mountains.

The story of Hemsedal
Hemsedal's mountains earn their nickname. Where most Nordic ski hills are rounded forest domes, the peaks above this Hallingdal valley — Totten, Tinden and Røggjin — rise sharp and treeless enough that the area has been called 'the Scandinavian Alps' for generations. The result is Norway's most alpine lift-served skiing: proper steeps off the summits, wide open flanks, and top-of-the-mountain views that stretch across half of southern Norway's high plateau.
The resort pairs that terrain with thoroughly Scandinavian sensibilities: a long season stretching from November into May, extensive floodlit evening skiing through the dark months, and a children's area so well developed that half of Oslo seems to learn to ski here. Off-piste, the shoulder terrain between the marked runs turns storm cycles into short, sweet powder laps — and in late winter, ski touring from the lifts opens the wider Hemsedalsfjella.
It's Norway in concentrate: unpretentious, family-first, and quietly harbouring some of the best lift-accessed freeride in Northern Europe.
Signature runs
Totten summit runs
From the area's 1,450 m top station, long alpine descents with the sharpest scenery in Nordic skiing.
Reidarskaret
The classic off-piste couloir line through the cliffs — Hemsedal's freeride calling card, conditions permitting.
Family cruise to Fjellheisen base
Broad, rolling blues that make the resort one of Scandinavia's great learning mountains.
Local tips
- ◆Mid-winter days are short; use the floodlit evening sessions — skiing under lights in falling snow is a Norwegian rite.
- ◆Late March–April brings long daylight, spring snow and the best touring — the locals' favourite season.
- ◆Winter driving from Oslo (about 3 hours) crosses mountain passes; check conditions and carry chains or good tyres.
- ◆Norwegian après is low-key and prices are high — the mid-mountain waffle hut is the true institution.
